Music

School music begins in the Pre-Preparatory Department with pre-five pupils where specialist music staff work with children on all the basics of music making, gradually introducing them to different types of instrumental music as well as developing their singing and their knowledge of theory.

Class lessons continue into Key Stage 2 (7+) at which point all pupils become members of the Junior Choir. Many will also begin to play in wind and string ensembles.

Instrumental tuition is offered on a wide variety of instruments with pupils prepared for Associated Board examinations on a regular basis. It is usual for between 70% and 80% of pupils from the age of 7 to be taking individual instrumental lessons. Choristers and other advanced musicians are also offered weekly classes in music theory

There is an orchestra as well as string, wind, brass, jazz and recorder ensembles. These, together with the School Choir (which is made up mainly of non-Choristers) give regular concerts.

Pupils at Exeter Cathedral School are trained to give musical performances to the highest possible standards. Even more important is that pupils should enjoy making and experiencing music in many forms
