Sport and Physical Education

The adage "a healthy mind in a healthy body" is taken seriously at the Cathedral School so pupils undertake a varied and challenging physical education course from the Nursery Class right up to Year 8.

Children in the Pre-Prep Department use the school gymnasium every week to build up skills of balance, movement and hand / eye co-ordination. They are encouraged to progress through the stages of the Persil Funfit Scheme.

From the age of 4 in the Reception Class they also swim once a week for the whole of the year. Swimming is not only a sport, it is a life skill and as such it is accorded the importance it deserves. In addition to the ASA qualified staff at the Cathedral School, other teachers and ASA instructors from D C Leisure are used.

Pupils in Years 1 and 2 are taken out of school to nearby games fields to further develop their ball skills in small sided soccer and other games, as well as building up their general levels of fitness.

In the Prep Department from Year 3 onwards, pupils will begin to represent the school at various sports. For boys the main sports are football, rugby, hockey, cricket and athletics while for girls these are hockey, netball, rounders and athletics.

It is very much part of our philosophy at the Cathedral School that as many pupils as possible should be able to represent the school at some stage of the year. We therefore arrange matches at different levels to achieve this aim.

In addition to the main inter school sports, a number of minor games are played, some within the timetable, others in after school clubs. Canoeing for example is a games option for older pupils for much of the year while judo, fencing, cricket, squash, and tennis are all popular after school clubs
